The winner of this years UGP Iceman Trophy was one Fabrice Miguet, a French roadracer who could be classed as eccentric by some, but his determination and willingness to compete year in year out at all our International races is beyond question.
Fabrice has been coming over to our shores since 1999 and always brings a true international flavour of racing with him. I admit to not knowing too much about his career although I have tried to source various things on the IOMTT website etc. I know he rode the Voxan for a few years and remember him complete with goggles a few times at the Northwest. A true character no doubt.
I had a look at his website which is in French fabrice (my French is non-existent) and managed to translate some of it to read but the paragraph which stood out for me was the following:
“Again one of the qualities that does the personage: this is his humanity. It likes the contact and has the permanent desire to meet people. It likes life and profits from it!
To mix with it, for me this is a pleasure, a luck and this is a little a life lesson.
Thereto one adds a big one pinched of charisma, sincerity, a lot of liberties and this is this that does the Mig!”
Even in its broken form, this translation tells a lot of the man.
It was my great pleasure to meet and award him this years Trophy. One of the Iceman long term sponsors, John O’Niell, kindly agreed to present Fabrice with the Trophy and luckily enough John speaks French which was a bonus. Fabrice was elated to win this year’s award as he rightly reminded us that he came so close last year. I’m also sure this years prize fund of £1000.00 came in handy as well and it is thanks once again to the following friends of Joakim who make this possible: Allan Frew, John O’Neill, Noel Johnston, Leslie Moore (Dundrod & District MCC) and last but definitely not least Trevor Lindsay.
All of these people are true supporters of our great sport and true, lasting friends of Joakim.
Thanks again to the photographers Kevin Collier, Alan Armstrong and Gert Meulman and Baylon McCAughey for the pics.
See you all next year
