Cameron Donald, the Australian road racer, is the first ever winner of the Iceman Trophy, decided by Leslie Moore UGP Race Organiser.
Riding under the banner of Team DMRR/Honda Racing, sponsored by Keady businessman Des Moore, Cameron had his first ever Irish road race just over two weeks ago in the Faugheen Road Races. He had little time to learn the course but still managed to finish 2nd only to Irish road racing man of the moment, and multi race and title winner, Ryan Farquhar.
His excellent performance continued at the Mid Antrim Road Races where he put on a display of pure class for the crowds, on the fast, bumpy road circuit.
Cameron arrived at Dundrod at the beginning of race week to familiarise himself with the Fastest Road Circuit in Europe. After limited practice on Wednesday, Cameron started from the back of the grid in Thursdays Superbike race and finished in 9th place.
He won the final race of the day, the 4 lap Dundrod 150 Challenge on the DMRR tuned 600 Honda by over 12 seconds!
Saturdays Premier event saw Cameron race in 5 races in varying weather conditions resulting in:
8th place in the Superstock Race
6th place in the 1st Supersport Race
9th place in the 1st Superbike Race posting a lap time of 3m 31.589s = 125.923 mph (lap record 129mph)
3rd place in the 2nd 6oo Supersport Race (fastest lap of the race to Cameron Donald at 117.162 mph!)
6th place in the final Superbike Race.
Noel Johnston, UGP Clerk of the Course, presented the Trophy to Cameron in front of a large crowd of photographers and race fans, all keen to catch a glimpse of this highly popular and extremely talented rider. His performance on the day, which also netted him the ‘Best Newcomer Award’ was nothing short of breathtaking as he took many big name scalps in the course of his race day. Upon receipt of this Trophy and the prize of £1000, Cameron took hold of the microphone and gave a touching tribute to Joakim……
“I have had a great week here but this Award is a bit special to me. I first met Joakim at the North West 200 and also shared a pick-up with him at the TT. He was a fantastic fella and it was a privilege to get to know him. All thanks must go the folk behind this fitting tribute to a really nice guy”
That gesture completes the fantastic performance by a quiet, polite and awesomely talented Australian, who travelled far to compete in one of Irelands Premier road Racing events, in the true spirit of Joakim Karlsson – The Iceman.
